When i’ve been to Skopje in march 2025, the country recently suffered for a tragedy: a lot of people died for a big fire during a concert in a club. And that’s why there was not a great nightlife because the country was still in mourning

The first place i visited was Macedonia square, and i immidiately saw the huge statue of the warrior with horse (don’t call him “Alexander the great”: there’s still an argument with Greece about that)

The Millennium Cross stands on the top of Vodno mountain, so it’s possible to see it everywhere walking arount the center of Skopje

It’s possible to reach the cross using a cable car line situated in the middle of mount Vodno: you can arrive there by bus, or (if you have trouble with Macedonian public transports like me… 😁) with an hour trekking from the city center… only if you are brave enough!

It’s based on a grid design, similar to Eiffel Tower, and it’s one of the tallest crosses of the world. When you reach the top you can see all the city and the surrounding mountains

In the city center there are a lot of statues, and i really mean hundreds of statues among the buildings in classical style around Macedonia square

On the other side of the river, the landscape changes into Islamic style, going nearby the Old Bazar and the Mosques

Skopje is also Mother Theresa’s natite city (Anjeze Gonxhe Bojaxhiu); near Macedonia Square there’s a memorial house.

And there’s something that attracts every Italian’s attention…

The Kale Fortress is located in the Old Town, in the highest part of the city

I can say that Skopje is a nice destination where you can spend a couple of days, and have a nice time walking (maybe too much 🤭)
